While our format is formal, the learning environment is enjoyable, team oriented and safe. I believe that thinking critically is key to developing as a student and encourage questions during discussion periods. I also invite select guest instructors regularly to provide a diverse learning experience.

Mike's Training Philosophy:
- Kaizen: At the core of our training philosophy is the principle of “kaizen” or continuous improvement. We aim not to be perfect, but rather, we aim to be better than ourselves yesterday. Mastery is achieved through life-long dedication and commitment.
Facts about Mike:
- In 2005, he was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his work with the homeless community and sits on the boards of Haven Toronto and St. Michael’s Homes Toronto.
About Mike:
Sensei Michael McCarthy is the founder and principal instructor of Natsuoka Karate. A respected leader and competent practitioner of Japanese Budo, he holds a 6th Degree Black Belt in Wado Kai Karate, a 3rd Degree Black Belt in Shindo, and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Ryukyu Kobudo and has been teaching martial arts since 1995. In addition to training in Japan he has had the privilege of practicing several styles of karate, judo, kobudo, jiujutsu and other Japanese martial arts across Canada and internationally. Sensei McCarthy has completed the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP Level I and II for Karate and Level I for Judo) and is the current head instructor of the Toronto Metropolitan University Karate Club Program.
Biggest Challenge:
Saying “NO”! No is a difficult word, especially when there is a call to help a virtuous cause.
